Former US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper has stated that Iran's influence in the region has significantly strengthened. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Esper told The Hill that the perceived reluctance of US President Donald Trump to engage in large-scale military operations against Tehran has emboldened the Iranian leadership.
Esper noted that Iran has accurately assessed the US position and is increasingly disregarding Washington's warnings. He argued that Tehran has gained confidence on the international stage, allowing it to pursue a more strategic and calculated foreign policy. Furthermore, the former secretary dismissed the conditions Iran reportedly set for the full opening of the Strait of Hormuz as "absurd," emphasizing that Washington must firmly reject such demands.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global chokepoint for oil transit, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Tensions in the region have historically fluctuated based on diplomatic relations between Tehran and Western powers.
