Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to an 18-month suspended prison term for violating election laws during his 2022 presidential campaign.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the court ruling stipulates that the former president will not face immediate incarceration provided he does not commit further offenses during the probationary period and the verdict remains unchallenged. Both parties retain the right to appeal the decision.
If the verdict is upheld by the appellate court, the conservative People Power Party, to which Yoon belongs, may be required to reimburse the state budget approximately 39.7 billion won (roughly $27.1 million). This amount represents funds allocated for the 2022 election campaign, which were subsequently compensated by the National Election Commission.
This ruling adds to a complex array of legal challenges facing the former leader. Earlier this year, a Seoul court sentenced Yoon to 30 years in prison for abuse of power and unauthorized drone operations against North Korea in October 2024. Furthermore, Yoon is currently appealing a life sentence handed down for his role in the attempted declaration of martial law in December 2024, an act that led to his impeachment by the Constitutional Court.
