The death toll from severe flooding caused by heavy rains in the Indian state of Assam has continued to rise.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the discovery of three additional bodies has brought the total number of fatalities from the natural disaster to 78.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the floods have impacted more than 1.1 million people across the region. Authorities currently report that eight individuals remain missing.
To support those affected, 1,718 relief centers are currently operational in the region, while search and rescue teams continue their efforts in the impacted areas.
The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings of worsening weather conditions, forecasting that heavy rainfall is expected to persist across various parts of Assam over the next three to four days. Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel.
Assam, located in northeastern India, is frequently prone to severe flooding during the monsoon season. The Brahmaputra River, which flows through the state, often overflows its banks due to heavy rains, causing significant displacement and damage to infrastructure in the region.
