The death toll from natural disasters triggered by seasonal monsoon rains in India continues to rise, with official reports confirming that at least 164 people have lost their lives across the country.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the state of Assam has been the most severely affected region. Data from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority indicates that flooding has claimed the lives of at least 88 people, including 10 children.
In the southern state of Kerala, heavy rainfall has resulted in 26 fatalities. V. D. Satheesan, the state's leader, reported that over 27,000 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, while 11 people have sustained injuries and four remain missing.
Furthermore, authorities have confirmed 35 deaths in Gujarat state and 15 in Himachal Pradesh. In Himachal Pradesh, 14 of the fatalities were attributed to landslides caused by the torrential downpours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for continued heavy rainfall across various regions of the country from August 5 to August 11. The agency has urged the public to exercise caution and adhere to safety protocols as emergency response teams continue search and rescue operations in the affected areas.
Monsoon season in India, which typically runs from June to September, is critical for the country's agriculture but frequently leads to catastrophic flooding and landslides, causing significant infrastructure damage and loss of life annually.
