Manchester City has been found guilty of violating the English Premier League’s (EPL) financial fair play rules.

According to the report, the “Citizens” are preparing to appeal the decision.
In February 2023, the EPL brought 115 separate charges against the club covering the period from the 2009/10 season to the 2017/18 season. According to reports in the British media, one of the alleged violations involved Manchester City obtaining £30 million by circumventing UEFA’s financial regulations.
According to the report, the makers of a documentary about City’s alleged financial violations gained access to a UEFA report from 2020 concerning the English club’s finances. The report shows that the club received two payments of £15 million each from an unidentified person from Abu Dhabi in 2012 and 2013.
Although the transfers were recorded as sponsorship payments from the UAE-owned telecommunications company Etisalat, UEFA concluded that they were actually “disguised financing” from the club’s Abu Dhabi-based owners and constituted a serious breach of the organization’s rules.
Manchester City has consistently denied all the allegations, saying they are false. If the decision takes legal effect, possible sanctions against the club could include relegation from the Premier League, a points deduction or substantial financial fines. However, the final consequences and specific penalties for the club have not yet been fully determined.
The Premier League’s financial regulations are intended to promote financial sustainability and competitive balance among clubs. Any disciplinary decision in this case could have significant sporting and financial implications for Manchester City.
