Azerbaijan U-20 coach Vaqif Javadov has commented on the national team’s goalless draw with Liechtenstein in Group 2 of League D in the UEFA Nations League. He said Azerbaijan had wanted to win but failed to convert its chances.
Javadov said the players had rushed their efforts because they were trying to score early. He nevertheless expressed confidence that the team would win away in Liechtenstein: “As we did 17 years ago, we will win away in Liechtenstein. The players will feel more comfortable psychologically on the road.”
He said a victory over Lithuania in Baku could change the situation and called on fans to support the national team. In Javadov’s view, a strong bond between supporters and players could help Azerbaijan defeat Lithuania.
Azerbaijan beat Liechtenstein 2-0 away in the qualifying campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Javadov scored the opening goal in that match.
Azerbaijan have two points and sit second in the group, while Lithuania lead with three. Liechtenstein are bottom with one point. Azerbaijan’s next match will be against Lithuania in Baku on Oct. 4.
The UEFA Nations League is a competition for European national teams, with sides divided into leagues and groups. League D is the competition’s lowest tier, and teams play home-and-away matches within their groups.
