A boat carrying civilians capsized on the Ganges River in the Raghopur area of Vaishali district, in eastern Bihar state, India. At least 13 people died in the incident.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that, according to local authorities and rescue workers, most of those killed were young children.
About 20 passengers were aboard the boat, and seven people were rescued from the water with help from local residents and rescue workers. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
Specialist diving and rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed at the scene. The capsize is believed to have been caused by the boat being overloaded and losing control as the river current strengthened.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar state authorities issued condolences over the tragedy and announced that the government would provide financial assistance to the families of those killed and to the injured.
Law enforcement agencies are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the incident.
