The future of the Caspian Sea and the region’s adaptation to changing climate conditions were among the main topics discussed on the second day of Baku Climate Action Week.
Experts examined the impact of falling water levels, rising temperatures and increased evaporation on the world’s largest enclosed body of water. They said changes along the Caspian coastline could affect not only water resources, but also biodiversity, local economies and communities dependent on the sea.
Simonetta Siligato noted that changes in water levels and salinity could have a serious impact on coastal ecosystems and the livelihoods of people living around the Caspian Sea. She said changes in biodiversity could directly affect communities dependent on marine resources.
Experts also stressed the importance of planning for changes to the coastline. Runze Wang said even minor changes in water levels could expose large areas of land in shallow coastal zones and create challenges for ports, roads and settlements.
He said integrated, anticipatory planning was essential to identify vulnerable areas in advance and strengthen resilience.
Practical adaptation solutions were also discussed at Baku Climate Action Week, including improving data collection, monitoring systems and cooperation among Caspian littoral states.
Agriculture was another key topic. Azerbaijan presented the artificial intelligence-based “Farmer Scoring System,” developed with the support of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, as an example of how technology and data can support climate-resilient agriculture.
The event also addressed digital infrastructure, climate-resilient cities and the role of young people in shaping future climate solutions. Participants said timely risk identification and practical adaptation measures were essential to protect communities, infrastructure and ecosystems in the Caspian region.
