Azerbaijan's prosecutor general meets Iranian ambassador

Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchulu, on April 24 to discuss the expansion of legal cooperation and regional security.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office, Kamran Aliyev expressed his condolences over the passing of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and the loss of civilian lives in recent events. The Prosecutor General emphasized that the peoples of Azerbaijan and Iran share deep-rooted historical, cultural, and religious ties. He specifically noted that the sincere and friendly relations between the heads of state of both countries provide a strong impetus for deepening cooperation in all directions, including the legal sphere.

Ambassador Mojtaba Demirchulu expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and highlighted the importance of the relationship between the two nations. He conveyed deep appreciation for the fact that President Ilham Aliyev personally visited the Iranian embassy to offer condolences and for the comprehensive support provided by the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Ambassador noted that Azerbaijan was the first country to provide humanitarian aid to Iran, a gesture of significant meaning for Tehran. Furthermore, he praised Azerbaijan's role in facilitating the transit of humanitarian aid from other countries through its territory as a testament to the friendship between the two states.

During the meeting, the parties discussed various aspects of legal cooperation, including the fight against organized crime, particularly illicit drug trafficking. They also exchanged views on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, extradition, the transfer of sentenced persons, and increasing the efficiency of joint activities in these fields. Both sides agreed on the importance of organizing mutual visits to further develop institutional relations.

This meeting takes place within the broader context of Azerbaijan's active regional diplomacy and its commitment to maintaining stable relations with neighboring states. As key actors in the South Caucasus and the Caspian region, Azerbaijan and Iran continue to engage in dialogue regarding border security and the implementation of international transport corridors, which are vital for regional economic integration.
