Fifty-nine suspects have been detained as part of a corruption investigation into Mersin Metropolitan Municipality and the Yenişehir and Mezitli municipalities in Turkey.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reported, citing TRT Haber.
According to the report, those detained include mayors Vahap Seçer, Abdullah Özyiğit and Ahmet Serkan Tuncer.
The investigation at Mersin Metropolitan Municipality identified total public losses of 330.945 million Turkish liras in 13 tenders and 63 direct procurements. Direct procurement, also known as single-source procurement in legal terminology, involves obtaining goods, works or services directly from a specific supplier without holding a tender or requesting quotations.
Corruption investigations involving municipal authorities generally examine whether public procurement procedures were followed and whether public funds were used lawfully. Further details about the allegations and the legal status of the detained individuals have not been provided in the report.
