At a UEFA meeting in Berlin, 54 of the organization’s 55 member national associations backed a change in FIFA leadership. The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) did not join the position.

A statement published on UEFA’s official website said the national associations had lost confidence in FIFA’s current leadership. In their view, institutional reforms alone would not be enough, and a new leader should also be elected.

The statement said FIFA needed a leader with close ties to football, strong standing, the ability to unite, management experience and the capacity to earn the confidence of all regions. It added that the person should be committed to development, reform, integrity and independence.

The meeting also discussed the future of UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin. All 55 national associations asked him to run again. Čeferin accepted the proposal and said he would seek a final term at UEFA’s 51st Congress, to be held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on April 22, 2027.

Discussions on FIFA reforms and its future leadership are expected to continue among UEFA members and other representatives of world football. UEFA members will meet again by November 17. FIFA’s current president is Gianni Infantino.
