Approximately 2,000 residents have been evacuated from the town of Hürtgenwald, located in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia state, as a rapidly spreading forest fire threatens residential areas.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing international media reports, the blaze has reached within 200 meters of the Gey district, prompting local authorities to initiate an immediate and orderly evacuation of the affected population.
Local municipal authorities have advised residents to carry only essential personal belongings, identification documents, and necessary medications. Due to the intensity of the smoke, officials have urged the public to cover their noses and mouths with masks or fabric and to maintain a safe distance from the fire zone. Police have reported that the evacuation process has proceeded without significant complications thus far.
The fire has reportedly consumed approximately 300 hectares of forest land, an area equivalent to roughly 420 football pitches. In a significant escalation of the response, the German military has been deployed to assist local emergency services, utilizing specialized heavy equipment, including tanks, to create firebreaks and suppress the flames.
Hürtgenwald, situated near the German-Belgian border, is home to a population of approximately 9,000 people. Forest fires in this region are often exacerbated by dry conditions and dense vegetation, posing significant challenges for firefighting operations in the mountainous terrain.
