A woman and her three children were killed in artillery shelling in Kadugli, the capital of Sudan’s South Kordofan state, the Sudan Doctors Network said Saturday.
The medical group blamed the attack on the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, which it said targeted residential areas.
The network condemned the shelling, saying it caused civilian casualties, including children, and amounted to a violation of international humanitarian law prohibiting attacks on civilians and residential areas.
It said the deaths of the mother and her children highlighted the toll of attacks on residential neighborhoods. The group described indiscriminate shelling of civilians as a crime and called for an immediate halt to such attacks.
The network urged the United Nations and human rights and humanitarian organizations to document and condemn violations, hold those responsible accountable and protect civilians in conflict areas. The SPLM-N had not commented on the allegations at the time of the statement.
SPLM-N faction signed charter with RSF
The SPLM-N faction led by al-Hilu has fought Sudan’s government since 2011, seeking autonomy for South Kordofan and Blue Nile.
On Feb. 22, 2025, the faction, the RSF and several Sudanese political groups and armed movements signed a political charter in Nairobi to establish a parallel government.
Fighting between the army and the RSF has affected Sudan’s three Kordofan states — North, West and South — since Oct. 25, 2025. The wider war between the army and the RSF began in April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and displacing about 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
