The 78th Emmy Awards ceremony was marked by victories for prominent stars, surprise results and several records. Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay,” about a cursed town in New England, won a total of 14 awards across the ceremony and previously announced categories.
“Widow’s Bay” was named best comedy series. The show also won in the acting, directing and writing categories. “DTF St. Louis” received the award for best limited series.
Jean Smart, who plays sharp-tongued comedian Deborah Vance in “Hacks,” was named outstanding lead actress in a comedy series. It was Smart’s fifth Emmy for the role.
The result made Jean Smart the first performer to win the best comedy actress award for every season in which the series aired. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won the category six times for her role in “Veep,” had come closest to matching the achievement.
Welsh actor Matthew Rhys was also among the night’s leading figures. He became the first actor to win two lead acting awards at the same ceremony. Rhys was named outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for “Widow’s Bay” and outstanding lead actor in a limited series for “The Beast in Me.”
Noah Wyle, who plays Dr. Robbie Robinavitch in “The Pitt,” won the award for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for the second consecutive year. The HBO Max series about doctors working at a trauma center in Pittsburgh also won outstanding drama series.
At the Emmy ceremony, Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his long-standing work to advance Parkinson’s disease research and treatment. Appearing in a wheelchair, Fox recalled the support he received from the entertainment industry after his diagnosis.
Mariska Hargitay, star of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” hosted the ceremony in Los Angeles. The event took place against a backdrop of uncertainty in the television industry caused by production cuts, artificial intelligence and major corporate deals.
The Emmy Awards, presented by the Television Academy, recognize outstanding achievements in television and streaming productions. The ceremony traditionally brings together performers, creators and industry professionals from across the US entertainment sector.
