The White House has barred US broadcaster CNN from travelling with President Donald Trump on Air Force One during his trip to Tennessee on Saturday, in the latest dispute between the administration and the media.
CNN had been scheduled to accompany Trump to Knoxville, where he is due to attend a college American football game. However, a White House note issued on Friday night did not include the broadcaster on the media schedule, according to the BBC, which has requested comment from the White House.
CNN reported that no other outlet was listed as taking its place in the president’s tentative schedule.
Dispute follows court ruling
Last week, Trump barred journalists from CNN, Politico and MS NOW from the White House, accusing the outlets of publishing “fiction or lies” about his administration. The organisations said they were pursuing legal action and accused the president of violating constitutional protections for freedom of speech and the press.
ABC, CBS, “Fox News” and NBC, which share daily rotations covering the White House, temporarily halted their broadcasts of the president in solidarity with the excluded outlets.
A federal judge later ruled that the White House’s decision to bar news organisations was likely unconstitutional and ordered the administration to allow them back in, at least temporarily.
Restrictions remain for some reporters
Despite the ruling, the White House continued to deny access to some CNN and MS NOW reporters assigned to cover arrivals at a state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday.
A White House communications account said on “X” that media organisations did not have “free rein into every part of the White House, every event, and every press call”.
Regular television coverage resumed on Friday after White House officials allowed reporters to re-enter the building.
Trump is scheduled to attend a game between the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville from midday on Saturday.
