Operations of all Iranian commercial airlines worldwide will shut down beginning Sept. 23, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday, outlining secondary sanctions aimed at isolating Tehran’s civil aviation network.
“On September 23rd, all the Iranian airlines will be shut down around the world,” Bessent told US television network “CNBC”.
Potential impact on international aviation hubs
According to Bessent, international hubs that service Iranian aircraft would face exclusion from the US banking system. He warned that foreign operators could risk losing access to dollar clearing if they refuel Iranian planes, provide landing facilities or sell passenger tickets.
Iranian officials had not immediately issued a public response to the planned aviation restrictions.
Sanctions amid escalating tensions
The aviation measures come as Washington expands economic restrictions on Tehran under Operation Economic Fury, amid an Iran war that has entered its seventh month.
The conflict began in late February after coordinated US-Israeli strikes, triggering maritime disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, continued regional missile exchanges and increased pressure on Iran’s commercial and financial channels.
