The United States supports the swift resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe via pipelines crossing Ukraine.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) cited US, European and Ukrainian officials as saying so.
The idea was reportedly put forward in September by US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, during visits to Moscow and Kyiv. The proposal envisages selling Russian gas through a US intermediary to circumvent European sanctions.
According to the WSJ, Washington has also sought to present the idea to European leaders as a way to lower energy prices, as Europe enters winter with gas reserves at a record low.
The newspaper said the White House proposed holding proceeds from Russian gas sales in an escrow account under the jurisdiction of a third party.
Washington views the resumption of operations at the Nord Stream gas pipeline as a “potentially important component” of a broader agreement that would also address the Ukraine crisis and seek to resolve long-standing disagreements between Russia and US allies in Europe, the report said.
