World leaders have gathered in New York to attend the high-level debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Nearly 130 heads of state and government are expected to take part in the general debate, which began on Tuesday. The wars in the Middle East and Ukraine are among the main topics of this year’s diplomatic meetings.
Key issues on the agenda
Discussions will also focus on artificial intelligence, global security, climate action and the future of multilateral cooperation.
The debate is being held under the theme “Restoring trust and reigniting global ambition: delivering for people and planet,” according to the session’s stated focus.
Leaders’ meetings
The General Debate is a weeklong high-level event at which diplomats and world leaders deliver speeches lasting approximately 15 minutes.
As part of the event, meetings have been held among the foreign ministers of the “G7” countries, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump. Additional bilateral meetings are planned as the session continues.
The UN General Assembly’s high-level week provides a major platform for member states to discuss international crises, coordinate diplomatic efforts and outline priorities for global cooperation.
