The UK's Met Office has issued its second-highest heat warning level, as temperatures in London and the country's southeastern and central regions are forecast to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius. If realized, this would mark the highest temperature recorded this summer season.
The combination of extreme heat and long-term drought creates conditions where wildfires can spread rapidly. UK officials have previously highlighted that disposable barbecues are a frequent cause of blazes in rural and open areas. Consequently, the Prime Minister and fire services have issued strong appeals for citizens to refrain from using these products during the current extreme weather conditions.
It should be noted that under a 2023 agreement between fire services and the British Retail Consortium (BRC), the sale of disposable barbecues is subject to suspension during periods of extreme weather or upon justified requests from local authorities. Should current weather conditions deteriorate further, additional restrictions to prevent wildfire risks in open areas remain a possibility.
