Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with his Vietnamese counterpart, To Lam, in New York on Monday, with the two leaders discussing bilateral relations and regional and global developments.
The closed-door meeting was held at Turkish House, or Turkevi, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.
Strategic partnership proposal
Erdogan welcomed Vietnam’s positive response to Türkiye’s proposal to raise relations between the two countries to the level of a strategic partnership.
He said Ankara was working to expand cooperation with Vietnam in several areas, particularly investment, trade and the defense industry.
Invitation to COP31 summit
The Turkish president also underscored the importance of continued cooperation in international forums, saying Türkiye and Vietnam should maintain joint efforts on global issues.
During the meeting, Erdogan congratulated To Lam on his election as Vietnam’s president and invited him to attend the Leaders’ Summit of the UN Climate Change Conference, COP31, which Türkiye is scheduled to host in Antalya in November.
Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Vietnam were established on June 7, 1978.
