US President Donald Trump has asked advisers whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth should remain in his post after Republicans suffered heavy losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections, Anadolu Agency reported, citing CBS News.
Trump raised the question with aides and during phone calls, but has not yet decided Hegseth’s future, the report said.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has emerged as a possible successor. One source said DeSantis could secure Senate confirmation during the lame-duck period and take office after his gubernatorial term ends on Jan. 5.
Some White House aides have reportedly suggested that Adm. Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, and Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, could face scrutiny over their roles in shaping military guidance on the Iran war.
Democrats had called for Hegseth’s impeachment before the elections. The prospect of action could gain momentum after the Democratic Party’s expected majorities in both chambers of Congress.
