US President Donald Trump said Washington is working on a “massive” deal to purchase potash from Belarus at prices he said would be significantly lower than those currently paid to Canada.
“The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers,” Trump wrote on Monday in a post on his “Truth Social” platform.
The post did not specify the timing, volumes or terms of the potential deal. It also did not indicate whether Belarus had agreed to the arrangement.
Canada remains the main US supplier
Canada is the world's largest potash producer and the principal supplier of the fertilizer ingredient to the United States.
According to Natural Resources Canada, Canada produced nearly 25 million tons of potash in 2024, accounting for 32.8% of global output. Belarus ranked third, producing about 12.1 million tons, or 15.9% of worldwide production.
