US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that technology executives who attended a White House luncheon had signed a “morally binding” commitment on artificial intelligence, which he compared to a constitution.
Speaking outside the White House after the meeting, Trump said his administration was considering forming a committee of about 10 people to oversee the sector. According to the source, the committee could include some of the executives who attended the luncheon and would “watch over the whole enterprise”.
Proposed committee to oversee AI
Trump said the industry was already demonstrating “tremendous self-policing” and argued that technology companies understood the need to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence.
He said the technology could lead to major advances in medicine and help solve problems once considered impossible. At the same time, Trump said US law enforcement and intelligence agencies would pursue those who used AI for harmful purposes.
Administration plans terminology change
Trump also dismissed Democratic concerns about artificial intelligence as a “hoax”. He said his administration was formally changing the term to “Super Intelligence”, or SI, adding: “Whoever wins SI is going to win.”
The president described the luncheon as a gathering of some of the world’s leading technology figures and called the meeting “very special”.
