In an interview with Time, the US president argued that criminal investigations should curb artificial intelligence abuses, rather than regulations that could hurt technology companies. He also urged communities to welcome data centres, citing jobs and economic growth.

US President Donald Trump said law enforcement agencies would serve as the main check on abuses involving artificial intelligence, arguing that federal oversight should rely on criminal investigations rather than industry regulations. Time magazine published the interview on Thursday.

“I have a guardrail. You know what the guardrail is? The Department of Justice,” Trump said in the interview, which took place on Monday. “If they do bad things, I have a DOJ, I have an FBI. That’s your guardrail over here.”

Trump warned that government regulation could drive US technology companies out of business. Although he described the sector as a “whole new world” with potential downsides, he said companies should police their own conduct. “I don’t have to destroy the industry. We’re making a lot of money with that industry,” he added.

After a dinner with “Anthropic” Chief Executive Dario Amodei, Trump said the executive’s views were “much different” from how they had been portrayed in the media, adding that Amodei’s thinking was only “a little bit different” from his own.

Trump urges communities to host data centres

The president called for the expansion of computing infrastructure in the United States, warning municipalities that rejecting data centres could lead to economic hardship.

“I said, if you want to be poor, you want to have no money, if you don’t want to have a job, and if you want to live in a crime-infested area, squalor, all the things that go along with it, you should not have a data center,” he said.

Trump said data centres generate wealth for municipalities and ease financial pressures on households.

US-China competition over computing capacity

Trump also criticised US technology companies for building major infrastructure overseas and said he was unhappy about European efforts to attract facilities away from the American market. He singled out a large “Google” facility in Finland.

Describing data centre capacity as a national security priority, Trump warned that delays in building facilities in the United States could allow geopolitical rivals to gain an advantage. “If we don’t build them, they’ll be built someplace else,” he said, pointing to China’s computing ambitions.

“I know China is totally over it. China wants every data center you’re going to have,” Trump said. “I don’t want that to happen. I don’t want China to have all these data centers.”
