US President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit in Miami, Florida, in December, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday, according to Al Jazeera, AFP and Reuters.
Rubio said the invitation was intended to create an opportunity for Putin to meet not only with Trump but also with other global leaders. His comments came after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“In order to solve problems, you have to meet with the people that you disagree with or the people that you might have some issues with,” Rubio said. “So we’ve invited President Putin to the G20.”
Zelenskyy urges further pressure on Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy used his address to the UN General Assembly to call for greater financial pressure on Moscow.
“When someone gives Russia more money through trade, they give this war more time,” Zelenskyy said, arguing that reducing Russia’s revenues was necessary to limit its ability to continue the war.
Trump has so far been unable to secure an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to end the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
Disagreement over ceasefire proposals
Ukrainian officials have called for a halt to attacks on energy infrastructure and measures to support shipping in the Black Sea. Russia, however, has shown little interest in such an arrangement.
“We are not going to have a pause in our special military operation,” Lavrov told the UN Security Council, accusing European countries of seeking to use a pause to provide more weapons to Kyiv.
Rubio said both sides had shown interest in a limited ceasefire covering grain and energy, while acknowledging that reaching such an agreement would be difficult.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine remained open to a maritime truce in the Black Sea and was awaiting Russia’s response. He said Kyiv was ready to support safe shipping and food security if Moscow took genuine steps towards de-escalation.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin in 2023 over the alleged war crime of deporting Ukrainian children to Russia. The warrant requires member states to arrest him if he travels to their territory, although the court has no enforcement mechanism. The United States is not a member of the ICC.
