Russian President Vladimir Putin could attend the Group of 20 summit in Miami, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday, while noting that Washington has not received confirmation of his participation. Anadolu Agency reported his remarks.
“There’s the potential that Putin might come to the one in Miami as well, although we don’t have confirmation on that,” Rubio told reporters in India.
Rubio was asked whether Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov would attend the G20 summit in Miami or a foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta. He said Russia had been invited to take part in the G20 and that the US president had made that decision, adding that Russia would therefore be represented at each summit.
Asked whether Lavrov would personally attend the meeting in Atlanta, Rubio said he did not know but expected he might. He said Lavrov had told US officials as much the last time they engaged with him.
