Six people have died in a fire at a residential building in Brooklyn, New York City, officials say. Seven others were injured in the blaze early on Thursday morning, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) told US media, according to the BBC.
More than 230 firefighters and emergency medical personnel were sent to the scene near Sunset Park at around 01:40 local time (06:40 GMT), the FDNY said in a statement cited by the BBC’s US partner, “CBS News”.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. The BBC has asked the FDNY for further comment.
A hazardous-materials crew was also dispatched because a lithium-ion battery was present, although it was unclear whether the battery was connected to the fire.
Emergency responders reportedly found the building’s first and second floors engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Four of the victims were found dead inside the building. Two others were found in critical condition and later died. US media reports differed on whether they died in hospital or while being taken there.
The seven survivors sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.
