US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has emerged as a leading candidate to become the administration’s new artificial intelligence (AI) adviser, according to US news website Semafor, which cited three people familiar with the matter.
Other potential candidates include Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and a longtime technology policy adviser to US President Donald Trump, as well as Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor.
Kupor previously left venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz to join the administration.
White House responds to report
White House spokesperson Kush Desai said reports about the prospective role should be treated as speculation until any appointment is officially announced.
“Any reporting about personnel decisions that have not been officially announced by the administration should be regarded as baseless speculation,” Desai said in response to inquiries.
Trump announces plans for AI initiative
The reported candidates emerged after Trump announced plans on his Truth Social platform on Saturday to appoint an “AI czar” and create an “AI force.”
Trump did not provide operational details about either initiative or explain how his administration plans to implement them.
The announcement comes amid an ongoing debate over artificial intelligence governance, corporate liability and the pace of technological development.
