A school roof collapsed during classes on October 15 in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 27 students and one teacher and injuring 20 people. Authorities said the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
The collapse occurred at the private Al-Khair Education Center in the city’s Dir Colony neighborhood. Officials said most of those killed were children under 13.
Hospital spokesperson Muhammad Asim said most of the victims were confirmed dead on arrival at Lady Reading Hospital. The 20 injured people were also taken there for treatment.
According to a rescue official, the roof of the upper floor collapsed onto the roof of the first floor. The first-floor roof then gave way, falling on students who were in class.
Television footage showed ambulances arriving at the scene and rescuers pulling injured, bloodied students from the rubble. Iftikhar Khan, the district emergency response official, said at least 45 children had been pulled from the debris.
Khan voiced concern that more children could still be trapped beneath the rubble as the rescue operation continued.
