Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that international conflicts are likely to continue in the coming years, describing the chances as high.

Speaking at a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club in Moscow, Putin said he hoped his assessment would prove wrong.

Putin calls for United Nations reform

Putin said there were reasonable concerns about how the United Nations was functioning, arguing that it operated in a less collegial and democratic manner than originally intended.

Russia supports fair reform of the UN, he said, but added that such changes were not possible without internal consensus.

He also argued that the organisation’s structure should better reflect the diversity of the world, with Asia, Africa and Latin America playing a greater role.

Warning about artificial intelligence

Turning to artificial intelligence, Putin said experts were increasingly warning that its spread could strip people of their individuality and reduce them to a common denominator.

He cautioned that AI development could lead to “digital totalitarianism”, which he described as a bleak and anti-human dead end comparable to the totalitarian societies of the past.
