Azerbaijan’s relations with neighboring countries are stable and continue to develop in a spirit of good-neighborliness.

“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Hikmat Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and head of the Presidential Administration’s Foreign Policy Affairs Department, made the remarks at the CAMCA 2026 Regional Forum in Baku.

He said sanctions against Iran create serious economic and business challenges for Azerbaijan, negatively affecting not only Iran but also Azerbaijan and other neighboring countries.

Hajiyev emphasized that Azerbaijan’s foreign policy is guided by the principles of sovereignty, independence and strategic autonomy.

“This is a strategic asset for us, and we paid a high price to gain independence and preserve our sovereignty,” he said.

According to Hajiyev, Azerbaijan’s relations with other states are based on transparency and mutual respect.

“Principles remain principles. We see international law eroding, but Azerbaijan nevertheless continues to adhere to its principles and approaches in interstate relations,” the presidential aide said.

He also noted that Azerbaijan’s foreign policy is inclusive in nature.

“Having relations with one side does not mean that we must oppose another. That is why Azerbaijan has good relations with Israel. Nevertheless, we do not abandon our principles,” Hajiyev said.

He said Azerbaijan supports the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

“Azerbaijan’s position is also known to our Israeli friends,” the presidential aide added.

Hajiyev also stressed that Azerbaijan acts in accordance with the principles of good-neighborliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

“There can be no situation in which Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory is used to carry out any activity against another state,” he said.

The CAMCA Regional Forum brings together participants from Central Asia, Mongolia, the Caucasus and Afghanistan to discuss regional cooperation. Azerbaijan’s stated principles of sovereignty and non-interference inform its approach to relations with neighboring countries and other states.
