President Ilham Aliyev said Azerbaijan had taken its revenge on the battlefield, and more.
"Operative Information Center-OMM" reports that the president made the remarks on September 15 while receiving a delegation comprising Secretary-General of the Organization of Turkic States Kubanychbek Omuraliev; members and observers of the Council of Heads of Muslim Religious Administrations of the Organization of Turkic States; co-organizers of the Yahya Bakuvi International Conference; and members of the Supreme Religious Council of the Peoples of the Caucasus.
The president said that despite all the suffering, torture and genocides, Azerbaijan had not taken any disproportionate action against Armenia or the Armenian people:
"During the Second Garabagh War, we targeted only military formations. Unlike Armenia, we have never waged war against unarmed civilians. This is contrary to both the mentality and traditions of our people. I said during the war that we should take our revenge and retribution on the battlefield, and we did so, and more. The blood of our martyrs was not left unavenged. We avenged the blood of our martyrs on the enemy, defeated the enemy and forced it to surrender. I repeat: today we live and build with pride as a victorious people."
The Second Garabagh War, fought in autumn 2020, ended with a trilateral statement that brought the conflict to an end and led to the return of several districts surrounding Garabagh to Azerbaijan. The war remains a defining event in Azerbaijan’s modern history and is commemorated through official events and memorials dedicated to those killed in the conflict.
