On July 21, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held an expanded meeting with the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in Berlin.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the German President warmly recalled his previous visit to Azerbaijan. President Steinmeier characterized both Azerbaijan and Germany as "islands of stability" against the backdrop of current global and regional developments. He also extended his congratulations regarding the progress achieved in the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace agenda.
During the discussions, the German President highlighted Azerbaijan's pivotal role in Europe's energy security. In response, President Ilham Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan has expanded its energy footprint and is now exporting natural gas to both Germany and Austria.
The meeting underscored the friendly nature of bilateral relations, with both leaders noting the significant potential for further development in economic and business ties. There was mutual confidence that this visit would provide a substantial impetus for deepening bilateral cooperation. The parties emphasized the strategic importance of the "Joint Declaration on a Strategic Agenda for Bilateral Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Federal Republic of Germany," which is set to be signed by President Ilham Aliyev and Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the visit.
The discussions also touched upon the visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Baku, highlighting the ongoing development of Azerbaijan-European Union relations. Furthermore, the leaders discussed the significance of the Middle Corridor, in which Azerbaijan plays a crucial role, and exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East.
Germany and Azerbaijan have maintained diplomatic relations since 1992, with cooperation spanning energy, trade, and cultural exchange. Germany remains one of Azerbaijan's key economic partners in the European Union, particularly in the energy sector, as Azerbaijan continues to play a vital role in diversifying Europe's energy supplies.
