A 102-year-old woman died and firefighters rescued 90 people after heavy rain caused flooding in the southeastern Spanish town of Madrigueras, regional authorities said on Saturday, according to Reuters.
Cars were swept through the streets after rain fell on Friday, prompting a large-scale rescue operation, authorities in the Castilla-La Mancha region said. Firefighters found the woman’s body at her home, where the water had risen to more than one metre.
A total of 142 litres of rain per square metre fell in the town, which has 4,760 residents. Heavy rain also affected areas of southeastern and northeastern Spain on Friday.
The flooding followed Spain’s hottest summer on record. Almost 2,150 people are believed to have died from heat-related causes in August.
