According to Portugal’s “O Jogo” newspaper, Cristiano Ronaldo has decided to end his career with the national team. The 40-year-old forward reportedly does not intend to wear the Portugal shirt again, and his decision is said to be irreversible.
Neither the player nor the Portuguese Football Federation has officially confirmed the report. If confirmed, the decision could become one of the most serious controversies in the team’s history, the report said.
Ronaldo left the Portugal national team camp on Oct. 30 after head coach Jorge Jesus said at a news conference that he would not name the forward in the starting lineup for the Nations League match against Denmark.
Ronaldo later issued a statement confirming that he had left the camp and promised to “tell the whole truth” soon. According to “O Jogo,” the footballer did not say goodbye to any of his teammates when he left the camp.
Cristiano Ronaldo has made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored 146 goals. He is the team’s record appearance holder and leading scorer, having represented the national side across multiple generations.
