North Korea’s defense research institutes have tested a major weapons system, the state news agency KCNA reported on Sunday, according to AnewZ.

KCNA said the test was intended to assess the combat suitability and power of a cluster-bomb warhead designed for tactical ballistic missiles.

According to the test results, a standard Type 2 cluster-bomb warhead can destroy targets across an area of 12 to 13 hectares at maximum density.

An official from North Korea’s Missile Administration said the cluster-bomb warheads were divided into four categories but gave no further details. KCNA said the country plans to equip its military units to use all four types by the end of 2026, depending on operational requirements.

Pyongyang steps up military activity

In recent weeks, Pyongyang has conducted several missile tests and displayed unmanned aerial vehicles as it has showcased its military capabilities. Analysts said the tests could be part of efforts to modernize the military.

North Korea has also gained experience in modern warfare by sending troops to fight in Ukraine alongside its ally, Moscow.

Last Thursday, North Korea launched about 10 ballistic missiles from its east coast into the sea while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was in South Korea to attend a summit.
