More than 500 protesters clashed with police at Porte de Vincennes in eastern Paris on Saturday as a demonstration in the capital drew to a close, the Paris police prefecture said, according to Anadolu Agency.
The prefecture described those gathered at the site as “rioters” and said officers were moving to arrest people involved in the unrest and disperse the crowd.
“Police are maneuvering to apprehend those involved in the unrest and facilitate the dispersal of the crowd,” the prefecture said.
The clashes came during nationwide demonstrations over the cost of living, education and public services, following unrest at protests last weekend.
The Paris police prefecture estimated that 110,000 people took part in Saturday’s march in the capital.
France’s Interior Ministry put the nationwide turnout at around 410,000, while the CGT trade union estimated it at 800,000. Clashes with police, looting and vandalism were reported in several cities.
