Azerbaijan’s national football team drew 1-1 with Lithuania in its opening match of the new UEFA Nations League season.
Mirbaghir Isayev, head of UEFA’s Elite Coaching Project, said after the match that Azerbaijan deserved to win. He praised the team’s performance.
“The team fought honorably for Azerbaijan. The most encouraging aspect was that the players did not want to lose. Although they fell behind, they managed to earn a point. I believe in head coach Ayhan Abbasov. The atmosphere that has been created shows that he has prepared the squad psychologically to a high level,” Isayev said.
The veteran footballer noted that, unlike in previous years, the team did not stop competing after conceding a goal. “We saw the players fight for every inch of the pitch. The national team deserved three points in that match,” he said.
Isayev also said he believed Azerbaijan would win its two matches against Liechtenstein. According to him, the team has an 80% chance of winning those games.
Azerbaijan will play its next match in Group 2 of League D against Liechtenstein on Oct. 1.
The UEFA Nations League is a competition for European national teams designed to provide regular competitive fixtures and reduce the number of friendly matches. Azerbaijan and Lithuania are competing in League D, where points from each match determine the group standings.
