Prime Minister Carney will first arrive in Mumbai, where he is scheduled to meet with prominent business leaders to initiate negotiations on a comprehensive trade agreement, which officials expect to finalize by November. Following his engagements in Mumbai, he will travel to New Delhi for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit aims to strengthen ties with India, China, and the Middle East as part of a broader strategy to diversify Canada's economic partnerships and establish a new global trade order, thereby reducing the country's economic dependence on the United States, currently led by US President Donald Trump.
Following his mission in India, Carney will travel to Australia to address the Parliament and discuss enhancing military, trade, and defense cooperation. The final leg of the 10-day tour will take the Prime Minister to Japan for talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, focusing on increasing trade in the automotive, energy, and critical minerals sectors.
This diplomatic mission marks a significant shift in Canada's foreign policy. Relations between Canada and India had deteriorated significantly several years ago after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen.
