Manchester City officials could face criminal charges following an independent commission’s ruling in the club’s financial violations case, The Sun reported.
The commission concluded that the English Premier League’s financial rules had been seriously breached between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. According to the investigation, the club used sham agreements with commercial partners, inflated revenues, understated expenses and submitted misleading financial reports.
The alleged violations could draw the attention not only of football authorities, but also of police, tax authorities and financial regulators. The case also concerns the submission of inaccurate financial information and the concealment of the true nature of certain payments.
If the episodes receive a criminal-law assessment, individual club officials could face criminal liability, including imprisonment. Any such action would depend on separate investigations and decisions by the relevant law-enforcement and regulatory bodies.
Manchester City denies the breaches and intends to appeal the commission’s decision. No sanctions against the club have yet been announced.
The case highlights the broader importance of financial oversight in professional football, where clubs are required to provide accurate records and comply with rules governing revenues, expenses and related-party transactions.
