Mahir Mammadov has been elected vice president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) for a third term.
The Azerbaijan Chess Federation president made the announcement after the FIDE Congress held in Samarkand.
Mammadov said his re-election was not only a personal achievement but also international recognition of Azerbaijan’s chess school and the state’s attention to sports. He said that living up to the confidence placed in him was a major responsibility.
FIDE priorities for the next four years
Mammadov said a number of goals had been set for the next four years together with newly elected FIDE President Timur Turlov. He highlighted expanding chess’s global reach and making the game more accessible to young people through modern technologies and digital platforms as key priorities.
According to Mammadov, chess education programs in schools will be strengthened, while innovative projects will be implemented to increase women’s participation in professional chess and management. Azerbaijan will continue its efforts to promote the development of chess nationally and worldwide.
FIDE is the international governing body for chess and works with national federations to develop the sport, organize competitions and promote chess education. Its congresses bring together representatives of member federations to decide on the organization’s leadership and strategic priorities.
