A magnitude 6 earthquake struck Japan’s Okinawa prefecture.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Japan Meteorological Agency provided the information.
According to the agency, the earthquake’s epicenter was located off the coast of Yonaguni Island. The tremors occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Officials said changes in sea levels were possible after the earthquake, but no tsunami threat had emerged.
The earthquake was strongly felt in various parts of Okinawa prefecture, causing brief concern among residents.
Okinawa prefecture is part of Japan’s southwestern Ryukyu island chain, an area that experiences seismic activity because of its location near several tectonic plate boundaries. Japan maintains a nationwide monitoring and warning system for earthquakes and possible tsunami effects.
