French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Lebanon, highlighting the significant role played by the United States in the mediation process.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the French leader expressed his support for the diplomatic breakthrough via his official account on X (formerly Twitter).
"I express my full support for the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel. I also express my concern that it could be violated as a result of the continuation of military operations. I demand that the safety of the civilian population on both sides of the Lebanon-Israel border be ensured. Hezbollah must lay down its arms, and Israel must respect Lebanon's sovereignty and stop the war," Macron stated.
The announcement follows a statement from US President Donald Trump, who confirmed on April 16 that Israel and Lebanon had reached an agreement for a 10-day ceasefire, effective from 17:00 Eastern Time. The deal aims to provide a window for further negotiations and a de-escalation of the conflict that has intensified in recent months.
The ceasefire comes amid a complex geopolitical landscape in the Middle East, where international mediators have been working to prevent a wider regional escalation. France, maintaining historical ties with Lebanon, has consistently advocated for the country's territorial integrity and the strengthening of its state institutions.
