Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has called Azerbaijan’s decision to chair the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) for the first time in 2028 a historic moment.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that the Belarusian leader made the remarks at a meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State.
He said the decision by President Ilham Aliyev would mark a new stage in the development of the CIS.
“This is undoubtedly a historic moment,” the Belarusian leader said.
He also expressed hope that Armenia would decide to “assume this honorable function in 2029, in line with the sequence.”
According to Lukashenko, Belarus intends to provide maximum support to all member states during their chairmanships and will take an active part in all processes. “There is no doubt that the CIS has not exhausted its potential. Our union will remain so for many years to come,” he said.
