International Judo Federation (IJF) Secretary General Liza Allan said she was confident the world championships, which begin in Baku tomorrow, would be a success.
She said she was pleased to return to Azerbaijan and highlighted the country’s strong sporting traditions and history in judo. Allan said she expected the event to be one of the best world championships held to date.
Representatives from 93 countries arrive in Baku
The IJF official praised the organization by Azerbaijan Judo Federation President Rashad Nabiyev and his team. She said they were looking forward to returning to the Gymnastics Arena for the second senior judo world championships to be held in Baku.
According to Allan, representatives from 93 countries will take part in the competition. She said support from the judo community gave her confidence that the tournament would be successful.
Allan comments on Hidayat Heydarov
Commenting on the prospects of Azerbaijan’s judokas, the secretary general also addressed the difficulties Hidayat Heydarov has faced recently. Allan said it was difficult for an elite athlete to remain at the top consistently, but athletes going through a challenging period could return to their previous level.
She stressed that anyone can win in judo, and that results can vary from one competition to the next. Allan concluded by expressing confidence that the championships in Baku would be a success for Azerbaijan.
