Russian swimmer Yegor Kornev clocked 44.84 seconds in the 100-meter freestyle in Baku, equaling the world record held by Australia’s Kyle Chalmers.
Kornev said matching the record was highly significant for him. He said he would try to improve his time in upcoming stages and wanted the record to belong to him alone.
He said he was pleased the achievement had come in Azerbaijan, adding that the pool was well suited to producing strong results. Kornev also noted that his preparation period had been short: only three weeks, or perhaps less, had passed since he resumed swimming. Despite this, he said he was pleased with his performance and the opportunity to compete against strong rivals.
Kornev said it was his first visit to Azerbaijan. Sharing his impressions of the country, he praised the hospitality of its people, the beauty of the city and the high standard of the pool.
