Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said the full launch of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line was an important development for Georgia’s international transit role.
According to APA’s local bureau, Kobakhidze said at a government meeting that the line’s full launch several months ago had strengthened Georgia’s position as a regional transit hub.
The prime minister said the country’s railway network was continuing to be modernized. He said 200 railcars had already been purchased, with another 200 expected to be delivered. Plans also call for around 50 new locomotives to be added to the fleet in the coming months.
Azerbaijan and Georgia agreed in May to resume daily passenger services on the Baku-Tbilisi-Baku route from May 26. The service had been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic.
