Former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart has criticized Lionel Messi for not wanting to bid farewell to fans of the Catalan club. According to Gaspart, Messi does not want to do so while Joan Laporta is the club’s president.
Speaking to A Bola, Gaspart said Messi is one of the best footballers in the world, but that Barcelona should come first. The former president urged the Argentine forward not to reject the club’s proposals, even a modest farewell ceremony.
“He should not refuse a farewell ceremony because Laporta is president, or wait for him to leave office. If Messi makes his return to Barcelona conditional on whether Laporta is at the club, I will not attend such a ceremony,” Gaspart said.
Gaspart added that Messi should come to say goodbye to the club, regardless of who its president is. He also recalled inviting the footballer to join Barcelona when he was 13.
Messi played for Barcelona from 2003 to 2021. He scored one goal and provided two assists in Argentina’s 3-0 friendly win over Benin.
