Japan carried out a death sentence on August 21, marking the first execution in the country since the summer of 2025.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Japan's public broadcaster, this is the first execution ordered by the Minister of Justice since the formation of the government led by Sanae Takaichi in the autumn of 2025.

Authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding the specific criminal case for which the sentence was carried out. In Japan, the death penalty is traditionally administered by hanging.

It should be noted that the retention of the death penalty enjoys broad support within Japanese society. According to a 2025 survey conducted by the Japanese government, more than 80 percent of the population supports maintaining capital punishment, while 16.5 percent of respondents favor its abolition.
