Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam believes head coach Michael Carrick should not be sacked. After six rounds of the English Premier League, the “Red Devils” are 13th in the standings.
Stam said that during Alex Ferguson’s time in charge, coaches had more time to build a team and achieve success. He said it has become harder in modern football to find the time needed to deliver long-term results.
The former defender noted that Manchester United have had coaches with extensive top-level experience, including Jose Mourinho, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Erik ten Hag, but they did not succeed. He therefore stressed that appointing a more experienced coach does not guarantee success.
Stam said Carrick is the right person for the role. In his view, Carrick knows the players and the club’s culture, has a good relationship with the management, and is being given time to work because the club trusts him.
Stam added that Carrick should have a plan, with discussions needed about which players to sign during transfer windows and how to build the team. He said Carrick showed last season that he could meet the target set for him, and expressed confidence that he would make progress and deliver better results this season.
